Community themes, tested

Besides its 19 built-in themes, RetroBar can load themes that other people make. We only list themes we have downloaded, installed exactly as their authors describe, and run with RetroBar 1.22.122 on Windows 11 (Arm64), Windows Server 2025 and Windows Server 2022. Each one shows the exact version we tested.

Short answer

Where can I get more RetroBar themes?

From their authors' pages on GitHub (below), DeviantArt and RetroBar's Discord. The RetroBar project itself does not host or check them. Before installing any theme, paste it into our Theme Checker: it spots the image paths that make many downloaded themes crash RetroBar.

Install: Download the repository and copy its Themes and Resources folders into %LOCALAPPDATA%\RetroBar (as its README says). Then pick the theme in RetroBar's Properties.

Its author calls it “not 100% accurate” but close. Two images it refers to (win7traytoggleicon.png and notificationclicked.png) are not in the repository; in our tests that caused no error, and the notification area arrow still appeared. The taskbar tint colour can be changed in the file (TaskbarTintColor). The author suggests setting RetroBar's clock click action to “Open Aero calendar”.

Install: Download the repository and copy its Themes and Resources folders into %LOCALAPPDATA%\RetroBar, or next to RetroBar.exe (as its README says). Then pick the theme in RetroBar's Properties.

We tested the fork mvf/RetroBar-Themes, which is the original repository plus one change to Windows 10 Dark; Flat Dark is identical in both.

Windows 10 Dark

Windows 10's dark taskbar, 30 px high, with text task buttons and an accent bar under the active one.

Install: Download the repository and copy its Themes and Resources folders into %LOCALAPPDATA%\RetroBar, or next to RetroBar.exe (as its README says). Then pick the theme in RetroBar's Properties.

We tested the version in the fork mvf/RetroBar-Themes, which shows Windows' blue accent bar (#0078D4) only under the active window and makes it a lighter grey. The original in ibillingsley/RetroBar-Themes draws a grey-blue bar (#8A9DB6) under every button.

How we test a community theme

  1. We download the repository at a fixed version (the commit shown above) and follow its README exactly. For all three repositories here, that means copying their Themes and Resources folders into %LOCALAPPDATA%\RetroBar.
  2. We select every variant in RetroBar with debug logging on, and record the taskbar, the log and any error window.
  3. Windows 7 Aero is also tried with “Collapse notification area icons” on, because it refers to an image for that arrow that its repository does not include.
  4. We remove the files again afterwards.

The raw results are in communityThemes in each machine's results.json.

Missing a theme?

We add themes that are published with a licence that allows sharing, so we can link to an exact version. Send the link to hello@retrobar.dev; we test it the same way before it appears here.
